Phaistos (Greek: Φαιστός; Ancient Greek: Φαιστός), also transliterated as Phaestos, Festos and Latin Phaestus, currently refers to a Bronze Age archaeological site at modern Faistos, a municipality in south central Crete. Ancient Phaistos was located about 5.6 km (3.5 mi) east of the Mediterranean Sea and 62 km south of Heraklio, the second largest city of Minoan Crete. Matala bay is were тhe artificial caves created in the Neolithic Age. Matala was the port of Phaistos during the Minoan period, following the destruction of Kommos, and the port of Gortys during the Roman period when Gortys was proclaimed capital of Crete by the Romans. The Gortynians occupied Matala at 220 B.C. Ruins of the ancient city are still visible on the sea bed as the ancient city was sunk in the sea. The archaeological pick has unearthed some traces of the palaces built by the nobles from the ancient cities of Phaistos and Gortys. There is also a cave known as "Brutospeliana" and legend has it that it was frequented by the Roman general Brutus. According to mythology, when Zeus abducted the princess Europa in the form of a white bull, he crossed the sea and brought her to the beach of Matala. There he changed into an eagle and flew her to Gortys where he mated with her. Crete Vip services in Matala: helicopter flight transfers, luxury cars rental - hire, motor yacht charter, yachting...

Welcome to Matala! Tourism in Crete has been a key element of the economic activity in the island, and is one of the country's most important sectors. Crete island has been a major tourist destination and attraction in Europe since the 1970s for its rich culture and history, which is reflected in large part by its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, among the most in Europe and the world as well as for its long coastline, many islands, and beaches. Modern day Matala is a holiday resort, tourism and commerce are the main economic activities in the town, with plenty of hotels, restaurants, gift shops, bars and nightclubs. Matala in Crete, is one of the most popular north coast resorts. Two main sources of wealth in Matala are agriculture and tourism. Matala was then a fishing village. In the 1960s, the caves were occupied by hippies who were later driven out by the church and the military junta. Matala is now a heavily overbuilt tourist destination relying on coach tours and summer visitors. There are many gift shops and bars. Matala's hippie history relives during the 3 days Matala Beach Festival (since 2011). On the other hand, starting from the early 1970s, tourism has developed rapidly. Nowadays the tertiary sector is becoming more and more important for the locals, since an increasing number of them are participating in the business.

Agrotourism and ecotourism are forms of tourism which are significantly developing lately. Matala is a thriving busy modern village with plenty of colour and vibrance, beautiful architecture and corners to explore. Matala was then a fishing village and owing to its exceptional natural beauty, it became the meeting place of the "Flower Children" in 1968. Although their conference failed to realize, yet they were compensated by the incomparable beauty of the area, which so much contrasts with the concept of destruction and war. Nowadays Matala is a small village living mainly from tourism. Matala in summer is crowded by young tourists, coming from all latitudes and longitudes of the earth to enjoy their vacation. a beautiful sandy beach, 300m long, with fine gravel and crystal clear deep water. Moreover, the seabed is quite rocky in some places (especially in the central part of the bach) and waves are common, due to frequent west winds. Furthermore, there is a huge cave on the north part of the beach, from the top of which some people dive. The beach is very well organized with umbrellas, toilets, showers, lifeguard, first aids, beach volley courts, snack bars, water sports, excursion boats, a camping site, etc. Around Matala you will find many options for accommodation, entertainment and eating. Also, a large part of the beach is covered by tamarisk trees, where you can find shade. In the evenings, the bars on the beach are full with many people, both locals and foreigners. However, it is inappropriate for those who do not like crowds. The Coves of Matala are located 75 km south-west of Heraklion. The artificial caves in the cliff of the Matala bay were created in the Neolithic Age. Matala was the port of Phaistos during the Minoan period. In the year 220 BC., Matala was occupied by the Gortynians, and during the Roman period, Matala became the port of Gortys. It has been suggested that the caves were once used as tombs, but it is more likely that they were used as living spaces, given their volume (corpses do not need that much room to walk around). One of the caves is called "Brutospeliana" because according to the legend it was frequented by the Roman general Brutus. Matala was then a fishing village. In the 1960s, the caves were occupied by hippies who were later driven out by the church and the military junta.
