At the harbor entrance is a 16th-century lighthouse with Venetian, Egyptian and Ottoman influences. Opposite, the Nautical Museum has model ships, naval objects and photographs. The former monastery of St. Francis houses the Archaeological Museum of Chania. Chania (Greek: Χανιά; Venetian: Canea; Ottoman Turkish: خانيه‎, romanized: Hanya) is the second largest city of Crete and the capital of the Chania regional unit. Welcome to Chania! Tourism in Crete has been a key element of the economic activity in the island, and is one of the country's most important sectors. Crete island has been a major tourist destination and attraction in Europe since the 1970s for its rich culture and history, which is reflected in large part by its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, among the most in Europe and the world as well as for its long coastline, many islands, and beaches. Modern day Chania is a holiday resort, tourism and commerce are the main economic activities in the town, with plenty of hotels, restaurants, gift shops, bars and nightclubs. Chania in Crete, is one of the most popular north coast resorts. Two main sources of wealth in Chania are agriculture and tourism. On the other hand, starting from the early 1970s, tourism has developed rapidly. Nowadays the tertiary sector is becoming more and more important for the locals, since an increasing number of them are participating in the business.

Agrotourism and ecotourism are forms of tourism which are significantly developing lately. Chania is a thriving busy modern capital town with plenty of colour and vibrance, beautiful architecture and corners to explore. We suggest staying within the walls of the old town, sitting by the Venetian harbour and soaking up the ambience. This beautiful quarter, without a doubt, is one of the highlights of a visit to Crete. Sneak down narrow laneways, discovering gems in the twists and turns; art studios, jewellery artisans, boutiques, cafes, museums and quite simply, charm.
